Dogs playing in pool during hot summer months

Summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors with your dog. Whether you're going on long walks, visiting the beach, or playing in the backyard. But as temperatures rise, so does the risk of overheating and dehydration. Dogs can't regulate their body temperature the same way humans can. So, it's up to us to help them stay safe and comfortable in the heat. Here's how you can keep your dog cool and hydrated during the hot summer months.

Always have fresh water available

Hydration is key to your dog’s health, especially in the heat. Make sure your dog always has access to fresh, cool water: both indoors and outside. If you're going for a walk or heading to the park, bring a portable water bowl and a bottle of water just for your dog. Encourage frequent water breaks, even if your dog doesn’t seem thirsty.

Some dogs are picky about warm or stagnant water, so try adding ice cubes to their bowl or using a pet water fountain that keeps the water circulating and cool. You can also offer dog-safe frozen treats made with water or low-sodium broth to sneak in some extra hydration.

Walk during cooler hours

Avoid walking your dog during the hottest parts of the day. Which is usually between 11 AM and 4 PM. Instead, plan your walks for early morning or later in the evening when temperatures are lower. Hot pavement can also burn your dog’s paws. So always check the ground with your hand before heading out. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog.

Choose shaded routes or grassy areas to walk and take breaks often to let your dog rest and drink water. On extremely hot days, consider skipping the walk altogether and doing indoor enrichment activities instead. Dogs can live without a longer walk, as long as you do mental stimulation to keep them busy!

Provide shade and cool spaces

If your dog spends time outdoors, make sure they have plenty of shade. Trees, umbrellas, or pop-up canopies can provide relief from direct sunlight. Never leave your dog tied up in the sun or confined in a small area without shade. While for some people it is an inconvenience keeping the dogs inside, it is a necessity during the hot summer months.

Indoors, keep the environment cool with fans or air conditioning. You can also set up damp towels for your dog to lie on. Some dogs enjoy laying on tile floors or in the bathtub where it’s naturally cooler.

Offer cooling activities during summer

There are many fun ways to help your dog cool down. Set up a kiddie pool in your yard, let your dog splash around with the hose, or create a DIY ice lick using a large block of ice with toys or treats frozen inside. Frozen KONGs, ice cube games, or wet towels draped over their back can also offer quick relief from the heat. Just make sure any frozen treats or activities are safe and supervised.

Watch for signs of heat stress

Even with the best precautions, dogs can still overheat. Keep a close eye on your dog for signs of heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Including excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or collapse. Flat-faced breeds like Bulldogs and Pugs, as well as elderly or overweight dogs, are especially vulnerable. If you suspect your dog is overheating, move them to a cool area immediately, offer water, and use wet towels or fans to bring their temperature down. Seek veterinary help as soon as possible. A heat stroke can be deadly if not treated correctly.

Never leave your dog in a hot car

It may seem obvious, but it’s worth repeating: never leave your dog in a parked car during warm weather. Even with the windows cracked, temperatures inside a car can rise to dangerous levels in just minutes. If you can’t take your dog inside with you, it’s best to leave them at home. If you see a dog in a car during the day, don’t hesitate to call the police. It is an act of animal cruelty and will be treated this way.

Keep your dogs safe

Summer can be a wonderful season for adventures with your dog. But it’s also a time to be extra cautious. With a few simple steps, you can ensure your furry friend stays hydrated, cool, and safe all summer long. Keep water handy, avoid the midday sun, provide shade and fun ways to cool down. And your dog will thank you with tail wags and happy panting.
